Job Search Tips and Employment Advice from AAEE

The search for a professional position in education might seem like a daunting task, but we have ideas and resources to help you get started!

1. Come to the AAEE National Educator Job Fair in San Antonio on November 8, 2009 from 2:00-5:00 pm!
   Overview:  The job fair is a 3-hour meet-and-greet opportunity for you and recruiters from across the country to discuss opportunities. Formal interviews and/or contract offers are not typical during the event, but you will have the opportunity to discuss future positions and your potential for finding the perfect position for you.
    
2. Take a look at our publications!
   Your career center may have these resources to provide to you, but if you want your own copy, check out some of our publications.  The most useful is the 2009 Job Search Handbook for Educators with numerous articles about the education job search. The 2009 edition has several articles focused on interviewing – the different kinds of interviews you will encounter, the questions to expect, and much more. This handbook will be your go-to resource to help you through every step of the job search.
    
3. Surf through Project Connect
   Our free online vacancy listing service is hosted by the University of Wisconsin - Madison. To search, go to Project Connect and enter teacher as your username and aswan as your password. See recent postings in all levels of education.
    
   There are several online job-hunting websites also connected to AAEE: Education America Network, SchoolSpring, Teachers-Teachers, TopSchoolJobs. Please check out these and other websites to enhance your job search.
    
4. Connect with your college's career center
   Your college's career center has resources to help you plan your job search or career ideas:

• Information and employer referral systems, often web-based
• Directories to help you locate the employers of your dreams
• Workshops or seminars to learn strategies in a class setting
• Career assessments if you are thinking of career-changing
• Professional career counselors and advisors are available to meet with you (generally by appointment) to individualize your needs and aspirations.
• Even if you graduated "XX" years ago, your career center is a great place to start your search.
• Any college you attended may provide you with career services.
• Through membership in AAEE, colleges may offer reciprocal services between institutions. For example, if you graduated from a college in Boston, but want to relocate to San Diego, your Boston-area college can help you obtain services from an institution in the San Diego area! Or, if you graduated in Ohio, but you are living in Arizona, you might be able to call or walk into an Arizona university career center for reciprocal assistance.
